My reading buddy Mala

Mala is my constant reading buddy, usually settled somewhere by or on my feet, or snuggled up in her bed nearby, keeping an eye on me. Before she came to live with us in Devon in July 2020, she spent four years waiting for a home after being rescued from the streets in Hungary as a tiny jagdterrier x pulin puppy.

When she first arrived in the UK after a long van journey, she was confused and unsettled. We collected her and brought her home, and our greyhound Alfie set about teaching her how to live in a house, and she soon found her feet and became the boss!

Unfortunately, Mala lost her big brother when we discovered that Alfie had widespread cancer in 2021, and after a grieving period, she bounced back and has become used to being an only dog.

Whatever she went through in her first few weeks or months of life is unknown, but she is still quite nervous of being touched in certain places, and of new people and dogs. She’s quite vocal but has a lot of greyhound traits, such as lazing around on her back in her various beds, which remind me of Alfie.

Mala was rescued by the small charity Wags N Wet Noses, who rescue dogs from Hungary and rehome them in the UK.
